In America it’s a vest, on the ski slopes it’s a gilet, and on a building site it’s a bodywarmer. There’s a lot to be said for arms-free insulation, even if no-one can agree what it’s called. It keeps your core warm while giving you much more freedom of movement than a jacket – especially during more active pursuits or outdoor work. The Ridgeway fleece vest from Filson is a cut above the rest. It’s got a full-length zip and plenty of pockets, with nice little details like an internal storm flap and a chin guard with a soft microfleece lining. The Polartec fleece material is lightweight and breathable but also really warm, and it’ll dry out pretty quickly if you get it wet.
